My Spring Shedding Must-Have

Samantha Matsuda

Tack Tip Tuesday: Why a Grooming Stone is My Spring Shedding Essential When spring rolls around, most horse owners know what’s coming—the great hair exodus! Shedding season can be overwhelming, but with the right tools, it can also be incredibly satisfying. Over the years, I’ve tried countless grooming products, from high-tech grooming gloves to fancy new shedding gadgets. But when it comes down to it, nothing beats a classic. One of my favorite go-to tools this time of year is the Grooming Stone—also called a Pumice Stone or Bot Block. This unassuming block might not look like much, but it packs a punch when it comes to removing loose hair effectively and gently.   Why I Love the Grooming Stone: Anti-static: Unlike some brushes and grooming mitts, the texture of this stone doesn’t create static, which means less hair on you and less annoyance for your horse. (Pro tip: still not the time to wear lip gloss to the barn!) Multi-use: It’s not just for your horse. I use mine to remove embedded hair from cinches, saddle pads, and even fleece-lined tack. Easy to maintain: When the edges start to wear down, just swipe it across a concrete surface to sharpen it again. Be warned—it can have a bit of a smell when broken. Best of all, it’s gentle enough to use on delicate areas like faces, legs, and underbellies where shedding blades might be too aggressive. I especially love using it on my horse Pi—he actually seems to enjoy it! Shedding season might be messy, but it’s also a beautiful reminder of the changing seasons and a great opportunity to bond with your horse. Whether you’re a die-hard Grooming Stone fan or just discovering it for the first time, I highly recommend giving it a spot in your spring grooming kit
