Curb Chain Options
Gentle Options for Curb Chains: Tack Tips for Sensitive Horses
When it comes to leverage bits — such as pelhams, kimberwicks, and Western curb bits — the curb chain plays an essential role in how the bit functions. Most commonly, these bits come with a flat-lying metal curb chain that connects to the hooks behind the bit and sits in the chin groove. When reins are engaged, the shanks of the bit rotate, and the curb chain tightens against the horse’s chin, limiting the rotation of the bit and engaging pressure on the poll and chin.
This combination of pressure points can be useful in refining communication, but for sensitive horses, metal curb chains may feel too sharp or intense. If your horse is fussing, head tossing, or resisting the contact with a leverage bit, the type of curb chain could be part of the issue.
💡 Alternatives to Traditional Metal Curb Chains
There are two great options to soften the feel without losing the essential function of a curb chain:
-
Leather Curb Chains
A leather curb chain is a direct swap for the metal version, using the same hooks. Leather provides the same stabilizing function with more flexibility and softness, making it ideal for horses with finer skin or those who dislike chain pressure. -
Gel Curb Chain Covers
If you'd like to keep the metal chain but reduce its severity, a gel cover can be slipped over the chain to cushion the contact and disperse pressure more evenly. These are great for schooling or transitioning a horse to a leverage bit setup.
🛠️ Fitting Matters
Regardless of the material, curb chains should lie flat and be adjusted correctly. As a general guideline, you should be able to fit two fingers between the chain and the horse’s chin when the reins are relaxed. Too tight, and it creates constant pressure; too loose, and it won’t engage properly.
