Tack Tip Tuesday
What is a curb strap doing on a snaffle bridle?
This week's #TackTipTuesday, let us talk about why you need a curb strap on a snaffle. Curb straps are a must-have when using any leverage or gag bit. Their job is to stop the amount of rotation and leverage that the bit can apply, they also provide a pressure cue under the horse's jaw when activated. However, when they are used on a snaffle bit, curb straps don't make any contact with the horse and are used just as a safety measure. When using a curb strap on your western headstall, you want to have it placed below where your reins attach to the bit. When you pick up on your reins to communicate with your horse the curb strap will not be in the way. You want to make sure your curb strap is fitted with a few fingers of room, so it doesn't pull or tug on your bit to provide mixed signals to your horse. The curb strap is used to prevent the snaffle from sliding through your horse's mouth if things go a little sideways when riding. You don't need to use one if you have a noseband on your horse as that will have the same result.
