Slobber Straps

If you’ve ever seen a western snaffle setup with thick leather pieces connecting the bit and the reins, you’ve likely come across slobber straps. But what are they — and why are they so popular in disciplines like working cow horse and ranch riding?

At Evolution Equestrian, we love diving into the purpose behind traditional tack pieces, and slobber straps are no exception. These handy leather attachments are typically used with mecate reins on a snaffle bit, forming a classic and effective bit-to-rein connection for western riders focused on developing softness and feel.

What Are Slobber Straps?

Slobber straps are flat, sturdy leather straps that attach to the bit rings of a snaffle, with mecate or rope reins tied directly to the straps. Their unique name comes from their early use on ranch horses — where reins often got wet from horses drinking, drooling, or working in all weather. The leather straps acted as a protective buffer between the bit and the reins, preventing water damage and extending the life of the reins.

Why Use Slobber Straps?

1. Weight and Timing
One of the main reasons slobber straps are used is for the added weight and swing they provide to the reins. This makes the timing of your cues more precise, especially in groundwork or when riding with soft contact. The weight of the slobber strap allows for a clearer signal when the rider picks up or releases the rein — creating more intentional communication between horse and rider.

2. Protection for Reins
Slobber straps also serve a practical purpose. They help protect rope reins from excessive moisture and wear, which is especially helpful if you ride outdoors in wet conditions or spend time watering horses under saddle.

3. Traditional Feel and Look
For riders who value traditional vaquero or cowboy gear, slobber straps contribute to a classic western aesthetic while still offering real functional value.

When Are Slobber Straps Used?

Slobber straps are typically used in the early stages of training, particularly in groundwork, colt starting, and ranch work. They are best paired with a snaffle bit and are most often seen in setups that use mecate reins — a long rope rein that can also be used as a lead or lunge line.

Are Slobber Straps Right for You?

If you’re working on refining feel, building softness, or wanting to explore more traditional western tack, slobber straps are worth trying. They offer a helpful bridge between your hands and your horse’s mouth — and can be a great teaching tool for both horse and rider.
