Jodhpurs vs Breeches

When it comes to horseback riding apparel, one question we hear often at the shop is: “What’s the difference between jodhpurs and breeches?”

While both styles are designed with riders in mind, there are a few key differences that can help you choose the right pair based on your riding discipline, footwear, and personal preference.

What Are Jodhpurs?

Jodhpurs are full-length riding pants that typically extend all the way to the ankle. They have an elastic stirrup that goes under your boot.  They’re often worn with paddock boots and leather garters, making them a popular choice for:

  • Beginner riders

  • Lesson students

  • Pony Club and schooling shows

You'll notice that most jodhpurs have a reinforced cuff at the bottom and sometimes even an elastic strap that fits under the boot to prevent them from riding up. They’re comfortable, easy to move in, and a staple in many English riders' closets, especially among kids and juniors.

What Are Breeches?

Breeches, on the other hand, are a more tailored style of riding pant. They stop at mid-calf and are meant to be worn with tall boots. Breeches are the go-to choice for:

  • Hunter/Jumper riders

  • Dressage riders

  • Eventers and competitive riders

They’re available in different grip styles such as:

  • Knee patch breeches, ideal for jumping disciplines

  • Full seat breeches, offering more security in the saddle for flatwork and dressage

  • Silicone grip breeches, a modern twist that adds subtle stick without bulk

Thanks to their fitted silhouette and stretch fabrics, breeches offer a close-contact feel and a polished look, whether you’re schooling or stepping into the show ring. They come in a variety of colors, but the traditional style is sand/tan, or white for competitions.

Which Should You Choose?

The right choice depends on your riding goals, what boots you prefer to wear, and how you like your gear to feel. If you’re just getting started or ride mostly in paddock boots, jodhpurs might be your best bet. For those moving into competitive riding or using tall boots regularly, breeches are likely the way to go.

At the end of the day, comfort, fit, and confidence matter most.
