Hanging Check Snaffle

Did you know bits are one of my favorite topics? At Evolution Equestrian, we love helping riders find the perfect bit for their horse, whether they need enhanced communication, stability, or comfort. This week’s Tack Tip Tuesday highlights the hanging cheek snaffle, also known as the Baucher snaffle—a bit designed for better connection and refined cues.

What Is a Hanging Cheek Snaffle?

The hanging cheek snaffle is easy to recognize by its distinctive cheekpieces. It features a small upper ring where the bridle cheekpiece attaches and a lower ring connected to the bit’s cannons for rein attachment. This design provides a more stable fit in the horse’s mouth while allowing a slight poll pressure effect, making it an excellent choice for horses that benefit from increased steadiness without the leverage of a Pelham or Kimberwick.

One of the key benefits of the hanging cheek snaffle is how it helps keep the bit off the horse’s bars and tongue, reducing unnecessary movement and improving consistency in communication. Riders who prefer a lighter feel on the reins may appreciate how this bit encourages a soft yet responsive connection.

Does the Baucher Snaffle Apply Leverage?

There is much debate over whether the Baucher snaffle applies leverage. Unlike curb bits, the hanging cheek snaffle does not have a shank to create traditional leverage. However, as the cheekpieces flex slightly when rein pressure is applied, a small amount of poll pressure is introduced. This can encourage some horses to soften at the poll, but it does not function the same way as a true leverage bit like a Pelham or Kimberwick.

The History Behind the Baucher Snaffle

The Baucher bit is named after François Baucher (1796-1873), a French classical dressage master. Baucher’s early training methods were controversial, as they emphasized compression and obedience. However, following an accident that left him permanently disabled, he refined his approach to focus on lightness, balance, and responsiveness to the lightest aids. His later theories, while still debated, have been widely accepted in modern dressage training.

Is the Hanging Cheek Snaffle Right for Your Horse?

This bit is a great choice for:

  • Horses that benefit from more stability in their bit connection

  • Riders looking for a softer feel than a leverage bit but with a hint of poll pressure

  • Horses that resist traditional loose ring or eggbutt snaffles

At Evolution Equestrian, we offer a variety of Baucher snaffles and other bit styles to suit different horses and disciplines. If you’re unsure whether this bit is the right fit for your horse, visit us in-store or contact us online for expert advice!
