How to Choose an English Girth: A Guide for Comfort, Fit, and Function
Choosing the right girth for your English saddle is essential for your horse’s comfort and overall performance. At Evolution Equestrian, we regularly help riders select tack that not only fits well but supports their horse’s movement and well-being. Here's what to consider when choosing a girth:
1. Double-Ended Elastic
Always look for a girth with elastic on both ends. This allows for even, symmetrical tension and a smoother release of pressure during movement. Girths with single-ended elastic can create imbalance and cause discomfort, especially over time.
2. Roller Buckles
Roller buckles are a must-have. They make adjusting the girth easier and reduce friction and wear on your saddle’s billets. This simple feature can extend the life of your tack and protect your investment.
3. Soft, Flexible Materials
Whether you prefer leather, synthetic, or a hybrid option, your girth should be bendable and soft to the touch. A girth that’s too rigid won’t contour around the horse’s barrel properly and may lead to pressure points or girth galls.
4. Anatomical Shape for Pressure Distribution
Most horses benefit from a mildly contoured or anatomical girth. This shape offers clearance behind the elbows and helps distribute pressure across a broader surface area on the sternum. Horses with a wide barrel and a forward girth groove may require a more curved design to prevent the girth from pulling the saddle forward.
Bonus Tip: Fit Is Everything
No matter how well-designed a girth is, correct sizing and positioning are crucial. Be sure to check where the buckles sit in relation to the saddle flap and ensure the girth isn’t interfering with the elbow or causing bunching.
